Pedagogy
In both the studio and the classroom, I believe in a student-centered approach for lifelong engagement with music.
-
Everyone can sing, and everyone can learn. I work with my students to find what awakens their interest, and link my course content to what matters in their lives. I strive to generate musician-thinkers who consider music in context and perform with a purpose.
— Technique: In the voice studio, I enable students to find a free and vibrant vocal production in all styles, informed by the best in classical and contemporary voice pedagogy. Students are free to pursue their interests and goals while expanding their knowledge base of style and genre. I teach extensively in classical, musical theatre, and popular modalities, and encourage my students to “cross-train” between these styles.
— Inclusion: In repertoire and curricula, I employ asset-based pedagogies to honor and leverage my students’ cultural background and lived experience. I include broad perspectives from women, BIPOC, and LGBTQ+ composers, songwriters, poets, and scholars.
— Engagement: I encourage my performers to engage diverse audiences through creative programming and community partnerships.
—Mentorship: I help students refine and pursue their artistic goals, locate and engage with opportunities on and off campus, and research topics that kindle their creativity.

My applied students have gone on to pursue a wide range of careers, including full-time work in singing and the performing arts, music education, and diverse other fields. Some pursue advanced graduate study in music, while others pursue unique passions developed through the liberal arts. Regardless of their chosen path, I hope to prepare my students for a lifetime of musical engagement.
